Samuel Mathieu sets up his company in Toulouse in 2001.
In February 2001, he created La DansOthèque, and in April 2002 Dépression dans
la cuisine, an expressionist dance/theatre trio performed by women, co-produced
by the Vivat d’Armentières and the Paris National Dance Centre. In 2004, in the
solo Est-ce.O.elle.solo, for which he was both choreographer and dancer, Samuel
Mathieu explored various ways of introspection using video on stage to multiply
the body and the dance. The Toulouse / Midi-Pyrénées Choreographic Development
Centre was a partner in this project. Us-Band, created in 2005 and performed
by four dancers including Samuel Mathieu, fluctuated between laughter and anxiety.
The work is based on the strong personalities of the four male dancers, gathered
together as a team to shed light on the issue of male intimacy and its representations.
In 2006 and 2007, Samuel Mathieu received financial support from the Toulouse
/ Midi-Pyrénées Choreographic Development Centre Choreography and from the La
Digue Theatre in Toulouse. These partnerships gave him the opportunity to develop
a two-year project. Throughout the first year, Samuel Mathieu created three independent
duos, three portraits of a couple in which he questioned the dramaturgy of the
body and human psychology. In 2007, he used the updated work of the duos to set
up a choral creation for six dancers: Go On!.
